When I was a kid we had two Afghans, Tajmir and Nakasha. They were sisters and they were gorgeous! Tajmir was jet black and Nakasha was pure blonde. These were stellar dogs that loved to run, which is the reason that we had to give them away, they always found a way to sneak out and they were gone like lightning. It is no wonder that there were hunting dogs, the way they ran really illlustrated the fact! They could out race a car at times as we spent countless hours chasing them around the neighborhood. I miss those dogs as they were really beautiful, great companions and wonderful to play with.
The Afghan Hound is among the earliest of dog breeds, or even the first sighthound dog breed. Behavior and Temperment
The temperament of the typical Afghan Hound may be aloof and dignified, but cheerful and clownish if playing. The Afghan Hounds' intelligence and rationale skills have made it an effective competitor in dog agility trials and also an instinctive therapy dog and friend.

The breed is known for a reputation amongst several dog trainers of having a fairly slow obedience intelligence. I can attest to this since no matter what we tried those dogs just did what they wanted, especially took off running every chance they could.
Lifespan and Health Issues
The Afgan has a lifespan of about 12 years and 18 years. The main medical issues for these dog breeds are allergies, and cancer. Sensitivity to anesthesia is another issue for the Afghan hound and they share it with other dogs in the sighthound dog classification group because they have relatively low levels of body fat.
