Temperament
The French Bulldog is a very gentle breed of dog, that is usually happy, fun, playful and caring, which is what makes them such great companion dogs. They need a lot of human attention. They are known to play a little rough with very young children, so supervision is critical at all times. Socializing French Bulldog pup early with children is also helpful.

Overall, they are very alert, loving and playful, they will cuddle with and comfort their humans, and are enthusiastic and lively without being loud. While these are active dogs, they do not need a lot of exercise, just walks, or running around a small yard is sufficient. The mood ranges of Frenchies can be varied, from hyperactive and full of energy to very relaxed and laid back.

While playful and fun, they are also highly intelligent and they can be semi good guard dogs because they will provide bark alerts to any one approaching the house. Because they are highly caring, affectionate and non aggressive, French Bulldogs get along well with strangers, and other dogs.  One important part of owning a French Bulldog breed is that authority needs to be established by the owner from the beginning. It's important to let the dog know in a stern, but loving manner about who is the master, without this they may become aggressive, stubborn and uncooperative, and it's important to establish who is the master early on because this breed can be difficult to train and the earlier the better. The French Bulldog absolutely requires leadership or they will not develop properly or thrive. Photo Credits: willem!

French Bulldog Training
French Bulldogs are known to be funny, sweet pranksters but they are also very stubborn, easily distracted and hard headed, which makes them difficult to train, so the owners of these dogs need to be patient, persistent and more hard headed than their dog. Crate training can be the best venue for training the French Bulldog, with most experts recommending about 4 to 6 months of steady and consistent training with a dog crate. Basic command training, early socialization of the dog with other pups and dogs, dog obedience training as well as developing good manners are all essential tasks for a happy and content relationship between human and Frenchie. Males that will not be bred need to be neutered because this will help greatly with housebreaking the puppy. Again, is is crucial to establish who is the master fro the beginning and provide consistent, stern training to divert bad behavior.
