Pet Kennel and Run Extra Features For Dog Comfort and Safety

There are some things you can add to your dog kennel and run that will enhance your and your dog’s use of the unit.  These extras are not necessities but things that you may want to consider depending on your needs and, sometimes, your budget.  A basic outdoor dog kennel must have four walls and a roof that protects from sun and rain, it should be ventilated and have good flooring—preferably something that keeps your dog up off the cold ground, that is comfortable to sleep and sit on. Here are some other additional features that may be beneficial.

Pet Kennel Extra Features

Insulation
Depending on where you live, what the weather conditions are like in your area and how much time your dog spends in his kennel you may need to consider insulating it.  It is a fairly simple procedure; you can buy insulating material similar to what is installed in housing and place it in the interior of the kennel.  You need to cover over it with plywood as well so that the dog cannot get to it. If you live in conditions where it snows you should consider this. Insulation also helps keep a dog kennel and run cooler in hot weather.

Vents
If your kennel is not well ventilated you may want to consider having small vents put in around the sides and rear of the kennel. You may want the vents to have adjustable louvers so that you can adjust the air flow, and so you can close up the vents during a large rain storm.

Storage Shelves
It is also very helpful to build storage shelves into the kennel, preferably at the external rear of the kennel. You can have full length shelving that is as tall as the kennel itself, or half shelving with space underneath the shelves for storing bulk food.  These shelves should be sheltered from the rain. They are useful for storing extra feeding bowls, grooming supplies, leashes, dog food and supplements.

Stable Door
It is sometimes useful to have a stable door built into the kennel. This way the top half of the door can open up enabling you to easily see into the kennel yet still keeping the dog confined in the kennel as needed. These are particularly useful if a female dog is whelping or has new puppies, or if you have a dog that is recovering from illness.

A Sliding Hatch
It is also helpful to have a sliding hatch on the kennel for ease of opening. This is particularly useful if you are short of space or need to have a clear entrance way to the kennel. The hatch door simply slides up rather than having a door that opens out into the pen.

While you may not need any of these extras, there can be times when they are useful to have. Often they can be built into the design of the kennel, or adjustments can be made to existing kennels.
